STAIRS FOR SMALL SPACES

When space is limited but access to an upper floor remains essential, we use compact solutions such as alternating tread stairs (samba) or miller’s stairs. Both types allow comfortable movement where traditional stairs cannot fit.
Alternating tread stairs (samba)
This construction uses alternating, asymmetrical steps that minimize the run length without sacrificing comfort. Popular in Scandinavia, they are well suited for narrow corridors, mezzanines, lofts, and holiday cottages. Their form is light, straightforward, and economical, while also adding an interesting feature to the interior.
Miller’s stairs
These are steep stairs with a simplified structure, usually without risers or landings. Their advantage is the minimal footprint, making them a good choice for attics, utility rooms, or secondary spaces. Due to the steep angle, they are intended more for occasional than everyday use.
Stairs for small spaces
Such solutions are designed with specific conditions in mind, where maintaining function with minimal space is crucial. Although they have limitations, well-designed compact stairs can be fully practical and aesthetically pleasing, even in the smallest interiors.
